Play Fortnite in English
Fortnite is fun. That’s why you want to play it. But it can be more than fun. If you are learning English, playing Fortnite in English can help you improve your language skills, perhaps even more quickly than an English class.
You can play solo, of course, but it can be even more fun playing as a team with one or more other players. And if these teammates speak good English, you have a great chance of improving your own English skills – for free.
First, learn the game. You can do this in your own language. Understanding the game and playing it well will make things much easier when you start to play in English. Even if you don’t understand everything that is said, you will know what is happening and what you should do.
We have a large set of videos to help you learn the game and, most importantly, you will also hear much of the English you can use to communicate with your teammates.

The second is a fun explanation of how to play the game, especially the building part. The third is a short look at the game mode where there is no building (zero build) and the fourth looks at the importance of communicating effectively with your teammates.

There is a lot to remember from the first two sets of videos, so we have added six short review videos to make things easier. Each one has examples of sentences and phrases that you can use at various stages of the game.

Here are short video clips of Fortnite players who not only play well, but who also speak English clearly and, for the most part, politely. Many of them have posted hundreds of videos, so you can find streamers you like and let them be your English teachers.
Building Your Language Skills
You can learn a lot of English by playing or watching Fortnite games in English, but you need to be alert. You should try to understand what you hear as best you can and listen for language you can use. We can get you started, especially with listening to the fast, natural English native speakers use. We can also help you look for, find and understand useful vocabulary.
Listening Practice
Short in-game video clips of the fast, natural speech you hear during game play. They feature a variety of accents (American, British, Australian, etc.) The clips are repeated 3-4 times with and without captions.
Vocabulary Building
Here the focus is on general vocabulary, useful words we have found in Fortnite videos. We begin each video a short in-game video clip featuring the new word. We then give its meaning, followed by illustrated examples. You then see the video clip a final time. You should understand each new word within a minute.
For Teachers
Playing Fortnite is clearly an out-of-class activity in most cases. It is not a game teachers are likely to bring into the classroom. But there is room for some short classroom activities to help students make better use of their video gaming time. These videos and related activities will give teachers ideas on what they might do, both for using Fortnite to learn English and to use other video games more productively.
