The four rooms of English-language learning

The goal of any English learner should be to use English outside the classroom for real communication – to enter the world of real English. Be sure to spend some time there even if your English is not very good. Real English for Gamers will help you.

Learning English is a bit like moving from one room to another.

Room 1: Native language plus a little English

For many students around the world, the first room is a classroom where the teacher uses their own language to teach. In Thailand, for example, the teacher explains English in Thai and students get very little practice actually using the language. Unfortunately, for many students, this is the ONLY English classroom they experience.

Room 2: Easy English taught in English

Luckier students start in a room number two where the teacher actually uses English to teach English. Here, the language is quite easy and both teacher and students try to speak slowly and clearly. Many students leave this room from time to time, however, jumping to room four through internet content.

Room 3: Advanced English taught in English

In the third room, the language is more advanced. Sometimes the teacher is a native speaker of English, so students begin to hear how the language is spoken in English-speaking countries. The topics are often limited, however.

There is a lot of talk about grammar and conversations are often about topics like buying things at a store, giving directions or explaining how to do something. Many students are more ambitious, however, spending time with fun English-language activities through the internet.

Room 4: Real-world English

Learners of English entering room four can be in for a shock. This room is filled with native speakers of English talking to each other. This is the real world where the language is fast, informal and the topics are limitless. Many learners never reach room four which means they are not prepared to really use English for study, for work or for fun.

Real English for Gamers is located in the middle of room four. Almost all of the language you hear is from native speakers talking to each other. You will hear many different accents and many different speaking styles. But, unlike the real world, you will also receive a lot of help. Thus, no matter if you are in room one, two or three, you can go directly to room four and benefit from what you find there. And remember, you don’t have to talk like a native speaker to succeed.
